Involuntary Repetition as Everyday Life| 2019 | US

Experimental Documentary

Total Running Time: 7 mins

OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, is a series of specific involuntary and repetitive ritual behaviors that I’ve been going through in my everyday life. In the past, this mental disorder used to influence my everyday functioning in some time of my life that I would constantly feel extremely anxious and insecure for particular incidents. This kind of feeling caused me repeating certain behaviors to try to reduce the stress. Although now it is not as severe as before, it’s still stayed with me. Taking this experience as a theme, I try to convey this experience by visualizing this anxiety. I use the camera as my “another eye” to record/witness the actual process that I had been through.

We interviewed different local businesses—incense shops, Chinese herb shops, smith shops and so on —documenting their stories and their ways of survival in the modern society. We also interviewed spatial experts to learn more about their heritage and value in an evolving metropolis. We believe the understanding of traditional industries is the first step to reviving an old district.
